So that a block is created every ten minutes on average, Bitcoin automatically adjusts the difficulty about every two weeks (every 2,016 blocks). If more miners join, the puzzle gets harder, and if miners drop out it gets easier. That keeps the pace stable, no matter how much computing power is in the network.
